What It Means That Your Counsellor Is In Supervision

As a counselling student, I work with the guidance of an experienced counsellor who supports my learning and professional development. Supervision is part of counselling training and helps ensure my work is safe, ethical, and thoughtful.

When I discuss my work in supervision, your identity is not shared. Conversations focus on the counselling process and how I can best support you, while your confidentiality and privacy are respected.

What Is Counselling Supervision?

Counselling supervision is a professional relationship in which a counsellor regularly meets with a more experienced therapist to reflect on their work with clients. It’s a "Counsellors Student's" space for support, growth, and accountability.

Supervision is often continued by experienced therapists as part of their ongoing development.

What Happens in Supervision?

In supervision, I may:

  • Reflect on how a session went and consider different ways to support your process
  • Explore moments that felt emotionally complex or brought up strong reactions
  • Think about clinical decisions and ethical questions with the guidance of a seasoned counsellor
  • Learn more about how my own relational style may be showing up in the work
  • Deepen my understanding of patterns, attachment, trauma, and cultural context in your story

Supervision is confidential. I do not share your full name or identifying details. The focus is on the therapeutic process — not on judging you or evaluating your life.

Building trust through thoughtful practice

Supervision exists to protect and support you, the client. It helps ensure that:

  • I am not working in isolation
  • Complex or difficult dynamics are not avoided, but explored with care
  • I stay connected to ethical, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive practice
  • I continue to grow — not just in knowledge, but in humility, reflection, and presence

Think of supervision as one more way I am saying: I take your care seriously. I don’t assume I know everything. I want to do this well.
